Jamaica Press Association celebrates local journalists November 23-28

Journalists will be celebrated in a weeklong line up of exciting activities organized by the Press Association of Jamaica and slated from November 23rd-28th. “Guarding Democracy” is the theme for this year’s National Journalism Week.

PAJ president Dionne Jackson Miller is quoted in a local newspaper as saying “We’re confident that the activities strike the right balance between celebrating, socializing and introspection, given our theme this year … “We’re sure there will be something for everyone.”

The first event by tradition is the church service. This year the PAJ members will worship the Emmanuel Apostolic Church family, at 12 Slipe Road, in Cross Roads from 9.30 a.m..

The church service will be followed by the customary President’s Brunch, hosted by Sagicor.
On Monday, November 24th, a forum from 9a.m. to 12 noon will be hosted at the Knutsford Court Hotel. Discussing the topic is “Investigating and Prosecuting Financial Crime” will be speakers Professor Martha Steffens, Chair in Business and Financial Journalism at the Missouri School of Journalism, who is participating courtesy of the US Embassy; Mr. Juan Antonio Gonzales, US Prosecutor, participating courtesy of National Integrity Action; and Senior Superintendent of Police Clifford Chambers who heads the Organised Crime Investigation Division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

Issues including the lottery scam and white collar crime will be highlighted according to information from Karen Madden, PAJ 2nd Vice President.

On Tuesday, activities will be hosted in Montego Bay. Professor Steffens is slated to lead a workshop on “Investigating Financial Crime” at the Western Campus of the University of the West Indies’ in Montego Bay, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m..

On Wednesday, November 26th the PAJ honours selected stalwarts of the profession at the yearly Veteran’s Day Luncheon, hosted by Wray and Nephew.indy Delapenha, Keith Brown and Ben Brodie are three named by PAJ secretary Rohan Powell to be honoured.

The PAJ’s Journalists’ Lyme, sponsored by LIME, will take place, on Thursday, November 27th, at the Countryside Club, 7 Courtney Walsh Drive, Kingston 10, starting at 6 p.m..

The climaxing event of National Journalism Week on Friday, is the glitzy Awards Banquet planned for the Jamaica Pegasus location. Coctails provided at the courtesy of Scotiabank, will be served at 6.30 p.m., with the dinner beginning at 7.30 p.m.
